Due to moves for work, a growing, then shrinking family, etc. – I've owned six houses, with five of them being renovation projects. Renovations can be tough as you spend a lot of time peeling back the layers of neglect (the image above is what the garage roof looked like when I first moved into my prior house), odd choices and sub-par construction that a house has suffered through by it's previous owners. I love to build stuff and am a decent woodworker and designer, but home repair and renovation constantly pulled me away from the things I wanted to create. To really spend my time building objects for the home, instead of constantly fixing things, I've decided to start fresh by building a house – where everything is new, and modern, and working for a change.
I sold my prior home, am sitting on a decent profit and am diving in thinking my past experience would prepare me for this project. How hard could it be? Find some land, consider build options and architecture, hire people, move-in, live the dream...
Well, not even close to being that straight-forward, and I've only taken a few initial steps. Join me on this journey to what I'm hoping will end up as my last home.
