Elevator shaft

Lovin’ an Elevator

I use a lot of music (-ish) references in my post titles, so this wasn’t meant to be risqué, but really just continuing that theme – sort of. However, a feature I originally dreamed of having in my home might(?) be on the way back – an elevator (well really a lift) between the garage and shop level.

Way back when I did an initial site plan (see The Inbetween), I imagined the garage being under the shop level to a certain degree. The thought was to have a lift installed in the garage to get equipment and materials up to the next level. I originally mentioned it to Michael (the Stillwater Project Manager) when we climbed the land together back in September of 2018, but as the site plan came together and the garage became divorced from the rest of the structure it didn’t seem feasible from an engineering standpoint. So I accepted the fact that I’m destined to haul lumber for my woodworking projects up the stairs and pay a premium to have anything delivered up to that level (do know how much a good table saw weighs?) The idea of a lift resurfaced during the summer during a discussion with Andrew at Stillwater, as he started to incorporate the work done by Coast Engineering into the plan, the distance didn’t seem as great (see below).

It seems the back west corner of the garage is very close to the front east corner of the work shop, so with some adjustment and some extra concrete work, a shaft can connect the two. As much as I love the strength training I’m currently doing to prepare myself for a lot of hauling – this really would be an ideal given my hobby’s requirements and my shop being about 20 ft up a hill. There are still some issues around this adding to the garage square footage (which is already at allowed limit) and what the impact to the overall project cost would be.

Yeah, so it’s still a wish that might not be able to happen for a variety of reasons, but its closer than it was before…
