Composite of house design elements

Attention to Detail

As mentioned in the last post, I received a document called an SOR (Standard Outline Recommendations) from Stillwater as part of the pricing set delivered in September. This 16 part document adds structure and detail to every dimension of the house build, like providing basic definitions and steps to site prep, utilities, foundations, etc. as well as who’s responsible for the various materials, and the contractors role across the project. The document also specs out (and provides links) for a variety of components that finish the build, everything from railings to windows, skylights, all fixtures and finishes, even appliances

I found all these finish pieces the most interesting. Stillwater has a series of design packages, and my SOR is based on the Modern Package as a starting point. This doesn’t really matter, as any element can be changed, but it is a good basis to get everything listed out. Moreover, I’m very particular with respect to everything that goes into the home to finish it, and need to be in the space to really make decisions about certain things like wall colors or fixtures.

I was also given the opportunity to speak with a new-ish member of the Stillwater team, Mia, their in-house interior design expert. Through Mia, Stillwater offers a full range of interior design services, from initial consultation, to help selecting a design package, to full custom interior design. My initial call with Mia was to run through the SOR and for her to get a sense of what I’m going for in my home. Again, since I’m deferring many of the finish and fixture decisions, and the interior is where I really like to play – I won’t be using any of Stillwater’s extended interior services. But Mia did go through the SOR and add more dimension and examples to some of my interior options available. So lots for me to think about as I transition into that phase of the eventual build. It’s also great to know there is someone I can consult with as I start to make more choices and decisions on the interior of the house.

Overall, the SOR, being so comprehensive, gives me a great sense of what goes into the build and everything needed to finish the house – I almost see it as a check/shopping list to truly personalize my home.
