Partial foam board model

Model Citizen

I’m following all the rules – maintaining proper social distances, wearing a face covering when out, and working from home. And while work keeps me really busy, with a new sense of urgency, the isolation due to Covid-19 has made me look for new things to do when I do get a break (or just need to take one). Although my digital 3D skills continue to grow (I’ll share my kitchen work in a future post), having a 3D model of the house to get a sense of scale and overall look would be nice – so my answer to that – foam board.

Yup, I’ve gone old school and rediscovered some of my long-lost hand skills to build a scale model of my home’s design. I haven’t worked with foam board since art school, or maybe a project or two with my kids, but either way – it was a long time ago. Short video below of the build and the finished product.

I wasn’t motivated enough to do the actual stairs, since I mostly cared about seeing the full structure from all angles and the scale of the interior. And while cutting out all the windows would have been a plus, after doing the skylights in the spine roof, I decided I didn’t have the patience, same for installing the deck railings. Also, the model is the current floor plan. I have a meeting soon to review changes to the site plan to see if we can bring down construction costs, so depending on those changes, another model might be in my future.
