As things had slowed to a crawl on my project, I had planned to take a few months off from posting. As summer approached, I was cleared to travel again for work – then things got worse pandemic-wise, and I essentially lost all track of time (its kind of been that way these last two years, plus). So now almost a year later… I do have a few new things to document as I strive to keep this record of my project up to date.
During the time since my last post, I did receive the full landscaping plan from Jason Lee. It goes into a fair amount of detail with respect to suggested plantings, irrigation, materials, etc. Planting page is below.
Beyond that, engineering work to bring down build cost continues, and I’ll detail that direction in a future post, or when I better understand where we’re heading.
I also made some big decisions heading towards 2022. With so much on hold as I wait for my last home, and with no firm timeline in view yet – I needed to get back into a house. So I ended my experiment of apartment hopping all around Los Angeles and am now renting a house outside the city. The extra space, distant neighbors and a large garage has given me the freedom to start investing in things that will eventually migrate into my home – most importantly – I’ve been able to spin back up my wood shop (see header image). With all my tools out of storage, and space to grow, this is also a huge ‘welcome back’ to finally making sawdust again and experimenting with materials, finishes and the design and construction of pieces that will eventually serve my ultimate goal. It also gives a nice distraction from work, which easily becomes all consuming, and helps me feel like I’m moving forward if if my home construction seems to have stalled.
